Caramel Brownies

Every time I make these I have to give out the recipe to a few people... they're a little bit of work, but sooooooo worth it!
  • 50 caramels (1 bag of Kraft caramels is a few more than 50)
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk

***Combine caramels & 1/2 cup evaportated milk in a small kettle on low heat to melt- it will take awhile.

  • 1 eighteen oz. box German chocolate cake mix
  • 1/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 3/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

***Mix cake mix, 1/3 c. evap milk, and melted butter. Press half of dough into greased 9 x 13 pan. Bake at 350* for 7 minutes only. Take out & sprinkle top with chocolate chips. Spread melted caramel sauce over chocolate chips. Crumble the remaining dough over the caramel (leaving gaps is good- it lets some caramel show through). Bake an additional 20-25 minutes, taking out when center is nearly set (jiggle the pan & the center shouldn't wiggle like liquid). Cool before cutting/serving.
